Sunil Sharma: Only Mainstream Politics Permitted in J&K under Modi Administration

Srinagar, May 16: The Jammu and Kashmir division of the BJP reiterated on Thursday that only mainstream politics would be accepted in the Union Territory under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government at the Centre. Senior BJP leader Sunil Sharma, who oversees the Kashmir division, emphasized to reporters in Srinagar, “This is the Modi Government, and everyone must adhere strictly to mainstream politics; no deviation towards right or left-wing ideologies is permissible. There is no alternative path.”

Sharma’s remarks were in response to former chief of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), Ghulam Qadir Wani’s statement, indicating the organization’s intention to participate in the upcoming assembly elections should the Centre revoke the ban imposed on the outfit in 2019. Sharma emphasized that while every organization has the right to contest elections within the framework of the Indian Constitution and laws, any entity engaged in anti-India activities or unlawful behavior would not be tolerated.

He clarified, “Under the Constitution, any organization is entitled to engage in political activities, and we extend a welcoming hand to them.” Regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to the Kashmir valley later in the day, Sharma stressed that the visit was not politically motivated.

He stated, “The Union Minister’s visit to Kashmir today is not politically driven. With elections underway, the substantial voter turnout on May 13 stands as a testament to the success of the Central Government’s policies, including the abrogation of Article 370.” Sharma speculated that Shah’s visit aimed to assess security measures, enhance voter turnout, and foster a peaceful atmosphere.

Addressing inquiries about a potential JeI delegation meeting with Shah, Sharma clarified that no such meeting was planned. He asserted, “No delegation is scheduled to meet the Home Minister. While non-political or senior figures may meet Shah, no political delegations are on the agenda.”
