KARGIL, Mar 20: Amid a significant strike and a massive rally, shops and business establishments remained closed as thousands of people marched on Wednesday in Kargil. They expressed their demand for statehood and the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Responding to a call from the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), a large number of people participated in a rally from Fatima Chowk to Hussaini Park via the main market. The protesters raised slogans demanding statehood for Ladakh and its incorporation under the Sixth Schedule. Banners displaying messages like “Ladakh demands statehood and Sixth Schedule” and “Save Ladakh, Save Democracy” were also held up during the procession.
The Apex Body, Leh (ABL), and the KDA, representing various political, social, and religious organizations from the two districts, are jointly leading the agitation for various demands. They have persistently advocated for Ladakh’s statehood and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule for the past four years.
The strike and rally underscore the determination of the people of Ladakh to pursue their rights vigorously. Asgar Ali Karbalai, the KDA’s co-chairman, expressed disappointment over the central government’s rejection of their demands and emphasized the need for a prolonged struggle.
Meanwhile, in Leh, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk continued his hunger strike to remind the BJP-led Centre of its promise to protect Ladakh’s delicate ecology and indigenous tribal culture. Wangchuk highlighted the importance of preserving Ladakh’s glaciers and urged the government to address environmental concerns promptly.
CPI(M) leader Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami extended support to the people of Ladakh, emphasizing the significance of addressing their grievances and respecting their aspirations.
The collective efforts in Kargil and Leh reflect the resolve of the local populace to safeguard Ladakh’s interests and advocate for their rights effectively.
