Srinagar, Mar 07: Despite forecasts predicting isolated light rain and snowfall over Jammu and Kashmir, the night temperatures have witnessed an increase and settled above the freezing point across Kashmir Valley, excluding Gulmarg and Pahalgam, on Thursday.
According to a meteorological department official speaking to GNS, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 2.1°C, compared to minus 1.5°C on the previous night. Although still below the normal temperature by 1.2°C for this time of year in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the increase in temperature is notable.
Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of 1.8°C, down from minus 0.6°C the previous night, remaining 0.4°C below normal.
Pahalgam registered a low of minus 0.4°C, contrasting with minus 2.9°C the previous night. Despite being 1.0°C above the normal temperature for the famous resort in south Kashmir, the temperature remained below freezing.
Kokernag, also situated in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of 0.1°C, compared to minus 1.3°C the previous night, showing a deviation of 1.8°C below normal.
Meanwhile, Kupwara town recorded a low of 2.5°C, in contrast to minus 1.5°C the previous night, indicating a 2.5°C deviation below normal.
Gulmarg experienced a low of minus 4.2°C, a slight increase from minus 6.5°C the previous night, remaining below normal by 0.7°C for the renowned skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
In Jammu, the minimum temperature was recorded at 7.6°C, significantly below normal by 11.4°C for the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
Other areas recorded minimum temperatures as follows: Banihal at 1.6°C, Batote at 4.5°C, and Bhaderwah at 1.6°C.
The weather forecast indicates mainly dry weather in Jammu and Kashmir until March 10. The weatherman predicts no significant weather activity until March 10, with the possibility of isolated light rain or snowfall on Thursday.
