Kashmir Experiences Persistent Rains and Snowfall; Gulmarg Records 16 Inches of Snow

Srinagar, Feb 19: Srinagar and other plains in Kashmir witnessed continuous rainfall, while higher elevations, including Gulmarg, saw significant snowfall on Monday.

A meteorological department official reported that Srinagar received 12.4mm of rain within 24 hours until 0830 hours, registering a low temperature of 2.0°C, which was above the normal temperature by 1.0°C for this time of the year. Qazigund recorded 12.8mm of rain, with a minimum temperature of 3.6°C, exceeding the normal temperature by 3.7°C. Pahalgam experienced 18.6mm of rain, with a low of 0.8°C, surpassing the normal temperature by 5.2°C.

Kokernag, Kupwara, and Gulmarg also reported varying degrees of rainfall and snowfall. Gulmarg, renowned for its skiing resort in north Kashmir, received an impressive 40cms (nearly 16 inches) of snow, with a low temperature of minus 2.8°C, which was above normal by 4.0°C.

Jammu experienced 4.9mm of rain, with a minimum temperature of 13.8°C, exceeding the normal temperature by 3.3°C. Banihal, Batote, and Bhaderwah in the Jammu region reported varying amounts of rainfall.

The meteorological department forecasted an “extended wet spell” in Jammu and Kashmir until the afternoon of February 21. During February 19-20, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain and snow in most places, with the potential for heavy snowfall over certain districts. From February 21 onwards, there is a likelihood of light to moderate snow at many places until late afternoon and evening, with gradual improvement thereafter.

The advisory issued by the Meteorological office cautioned about the temporary closure of higher roads and passes, including Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, Sadhna, Razdan Pass, and Zojila. Travelers were advised to plan accordingly, and farmers were instructed to adjust irrigation and fertilizer applications during this period.

As the ‘Chillai-Khurd’ period comes to an end on February 19, marking the middle of the 20-day-long winter period, Kashmir is transitioning into the ‘Chillai-Bachha’ phase from February 20 to March 1.
