Government Redirects Chenab River Water to Accelerate Hydroelectric Project in Jammu and Kashmir

New Delhi, January 29: The Government has announced a significant development in the 850-MW Ratle Hydro Electric Project in Jammu & Kashmir. On January 27, 2024, at 11:30 AM, the Chenab river water was successfully diverted through diversion tunnels at Drabshalla in Kishtwar district to expedite the project, according to a statement from the power ministry.

This diversion of the river flow is a crucial step that will facilitate the isolation of the dam area, creating the necessary conditions for excavation and construction works. The objective is to accelerate construction activities, reduce delays, and ensure that the project meets the scheduled commissioning deadline of May 2026, the ministry explained.

The Ratle Project is being executed by Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (RHPCL), a joint venture between NHPC Limited and the government of Jammu & Kashmir, with a shareholding of 51:49 percent, respectively. Situated on the Chenab river in Kishtwar district, the Ratle Hydro Electric project boasts an installed capacity of 850 MW. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs sanctioned the project in January 2021 at a cost of Rs 5,281.94 crore.
