Election Integrity: Swift and Strong Measures Against Deepfake or AI Interference, Warns CEC

New Delhi, Jan 25: On the occasion of the 14th National Voters Day, Chief Election Commissioner of India, Rajiv Kumar, underscored the role of technology in bringing transparency and efficiency to elections. However, he cautioned against the rising use of misinformation, deep fakes, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to undermine people’s “faith and trust” in the electoral process.

Kumar asserted that any attempts to compromise the fundamental tenet of free and fair elections through false narratives would face swift and robust measures to uphold the integrity of the electoral system. He extended warm greetings to all voters and urged first-time voters to exercise their franchise with enthusiasm, emphasizing the crucial role of the youth in shaping India’s democratic future.

While acknowledging the enabling features technology has brought to the electoral process, Kumar also highlighted the challenges it poses to democracy. He affirmed the Election Commission’s commitment to maintaining a level playing field, fostering an informed electorate, and swiftly countering false narratives that could impact the integrity of elections.

Looking ahead to the upcoming elections in 2024, Kumar emphasized India’s role as the world’s largest and most vibrant democracy. He highlighted the World’s largest peacetime logistical exercise involving over 96 crore voters, 12 lakh polling stations, and 1.5 crore-plus election officials. The Chief Election Commissioner expressed gratitude to the polling teams working tirelessly to deliver democracy to every corner.

Kumar mentioned the Commission’s efforts to make the electoral experience inclusive, accessible, and inducement-free. He noted that optional home voting facilities are available for voters aged 80 plus and Persons with Disabilities (PwD). He highlighted the successful conduct of elections in 2023 across nine states, with a focus on fairness, confidence, and joy.

Addressing political parties, Kumar urged them for continued support, emphasizing the three pillars of engagement – full disclosure, complete involvement, and assured responsiveness. He called for ethical and respectful political discourse, urging parties to inspire rather than divide, and promote ideas over personal attacks.

Concluding his address, Kumar expressed confidence in providing India’s electors and stakeholders with the best electoral experience, urging everyone to participate in the festival of democracy with vigor and enthusiasm. National Voters Day is celebrated on January 25, marking the establishment of the Election Commission of India on the same day in 1950.
