Transport Minister Sets Ambitious Goal: India’s Road Infrastructure to Rival US Within 5 Years

Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), criticized the BJP-led central government for suspending Opposition MPs, stating that it amounts to strangulation of democracy. She expressed strong disapproval of the recent security breach in Parliament, calling it inexcusable. The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc also condemned the suspension during its meeting and announced a nationwide protest on December 22.

Gandhi, addressing the CPP meeting, highlighted the unprecedented suspension of Opposition MPs, emphasizing the government’s disregard for legitimate demands. She criticized the delayed response of the Prime Minister to the security breach on December 13, viewing it as a sign of disrespect for parliamentary dignity.

Accusing the government of a systematic assault on democracy and its institutions, Gandhi pointed to a significant gap between economic growth boasts and ground realities. She cited soaring unemployment, concentration of wealth among industrialists, and rising commodity prices affecting the poor.

Gandhi took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their role in passing key bills related to Jammu and Kashmir. She defended the party’s position on the region, advocating for the immediate restoration of full statehood and early elections. Addressing challenges in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, Gandhi expressed disappointment but emphasized the party’s resilience.

Highlighting the party’s success in Telangana’s Assembly polls, she emphasized the need to fulfill the people’s mandate. Regarding the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Gandhi discussed the party’s preparations and its role in the INDIA group.

On the Women’s Reservation Bill, she criticized the proposed delay for implementation and called it an “eyewash.” Gandhi stressed the urgent need for women’s representation in Parliament, advocating for immediate implementation across all communities, including the OBC community.

Key party figures, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former President Rahul Gandhi, were present at the meeting.
