New Delhi, December 18: Opposition Members of Parliament have submitted notices in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, calling for a discussion on the recent breach of security in Parliament that occurred on Monday. Following the intrusion of two individuals with gas canisters into the Lok Sabha from the visitors’ gallery, causing panic, opposition lawmakers are insisting on a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the incident.
Currently, a total of 14 opposition MPs—13 in Lok Sabha and 1 in Rajya Sabha—are under suspension for the remainder of the Winter Session due to disruptions caused while demanding Shah’s statement. Among the suspended Lok Sabha MPs, nine are from the Congress, two from the CPM, one from the CPI, and one from the DMK.
Addressing the issue, Congress Lok Sabha MP Manish Tewari has issued an Adjournment Motion notice to discuss the breach of Parliament security. In the Rajya Sabha, DMK MP T Siva has moved a Suspension of Business notice to deliberate on the December 13 incident.
The security breach, which occurred on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack, involved two individuals—Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D—who entered the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour. They released yellow gas from canisters, shouted anti-establishment slogans, and were eventually overpowered by MPs.
In a separate incident outside the Parliament, two protestors—Neelam (42) and Amol (25)—demonstrated with similar gas canisters. However, all four individuals were remanded to the custody of the Delhi Police Special Cell for seven days on December 14.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has reiterated the demand for a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah in the House. Criticizing the BJP-led central government for the significant security breach, Kharge highlighted that BJP leaders are hindering the functioning of the House.
“This is a serious issue, and the government should address it. We have repeatedly called for the Union Home Minister to come to the House and provide a statement, but he refuses to do so. The BJP is obstructing the functioning of the House. This is detrimental to democracy, but there is no use talking to those who do not believe in democracy,” said Kharge.
