Unrelenting Cold Tightens Its Grip on Kashmir Valley

Kashmir : Despite a marginal improvement in minimum temperatures at various locations on Friday, freezing cold conditions persist in Kashmir. The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar forecasts clear weather for most places today, with a Western Disturbance (WD) expected to impact the region on December 16, potentially bringing light snowfall to extremely high reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.

Following the WD, dry weather is anticipated from December 17 to 24, accompanied by continued cold conditions across most areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Shallow to moderate fog is also expected in many places in the Kashmir division during this period, according to the MeT office.

Srinagar, despite experiencing a slightly improved night temperature of -3.5°C, continues to grapple with freezing cold conditions. Konibal in South Kashmir recorded the lowest temperature in Kashmir at -5.5°C. Pahalgam retained its status as the coldest place, registering a low of -5.0°C, 1.2°C below normal for the popular tourist destination in South Kashmir.

Gulmarg, the renowned ski resort in North Kashmir, saw a minor improvement with a minimum temperature of -4.2°C, 0.8°C above normal. Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded -2.8°C, an improvement from the previous night, while Kokernag dipped to -1.9°C. Kupwara in the frontier north Kashmir district settled at -4.2°C for the second consecutive day, marking a 2.5°C deviation below normal.

The region braces for the winter chill, with residents adapting to the ongoing cold wave, and the Meteorological Centre closely monitoring weather patterns for any significant developments.
