United States Exercises Veto Power, Blocks UN Security Council Resolution Urging Urgent Humanitarian Ceasefire in Gaza

United Nations, Dec 9: The United States has vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution on the Israel-Hamas conflict, which sought an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of hostages held by the Hamas militant group. The resolution, put forth by the United Arab Emirates and supported by over 90 member states, received 13 votes in favor, with the United Kingdom abstaining. The veto came despite UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres invoking Article 99 to appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire, citing the potential for a “humanitarian catastrophe.” The U.S. expressed dissatisfaction with the resolution, citing the omission of condemnation for Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel on October 7 and a lack of consultation in the drafting process. The resolution’s imbalance and detachment from reality led the U.S. to regretfully withhold support. The UAE’s ambassador expressed deep disappointment with the Council’s inability to demand a humanitarian ceasefire, questioning the message sent to Palestinians and civilians worldwide. The UK abstained, citing the resolution’s failure to condemn Hamas’ atrocities against Israeli civilians on October 7, emphasizing the need for Israel to address the threat posed by Hamas within the bounds of international humanitarian law. Guterres, in invoking Article 99, warned of a potential collapse of the humanitarian support system in Gaza with devastating consequences, including a breakdown of public order and increased pressure for mass displacement. The UN chief highlighted the serious risk of aggravating existing threats to international peace and security in the region.
