Army Commemorates Shaurya Diwas to Honor the Arrival of Forces in Kashmir in 1947

Srinagar, October 27: The Indian Army commemorated ‘Shaurya Diwas’ in Srinagar to mark the 76th anniversary of the arrival of forces in Kashmir, a pivotal event that secured the first civil-military victory for Independent India.

This historic occasion was marked by the reenactment of the landing of Indian Army troops at the Budgam Airport, which took place a day after the signing of the Instrument of Accession between Maharaja Hari Singh and the Republic of India. The reenactment was organized to pay tribute to the valiant soldiers and the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The event was attended by a diverse audience, including senior Army and Air Force officers, as well as students, who witnessed the recreation of this significant historical moment. The reenactment also depicted the violation of the ‘Standstill Agreement’ by Pakistan and the subsequent arrival of Indian Army soldiers on October 27, 1947, to liberate Kashmir from Pakistani forces.

Addressing the gathering, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, the General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, emphasized the importance of celebrating this occasion. He noted that it serves as a reminder of the day when Jammu and Kashmir was integrated into India, thanks to the bravery and valor of the Indian Army.

Lt. Gen. Ghai paid tribute to Major Somnath Sharma, the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, who, despite being wounded, led a company and prevented the Srinagar airfield from falling into the hands of Pakistani tribal militias, ultimately making the supreme sacrifice in the process.

The GoC also praised the bravery of other heroes, including Brigadier Rajinder Singh and Lieutenant Colonel Dewan Ranjit Rai, who gave their lives to defend the nation.

He urged everyone to pledge their commitment to work tirelessly to bring peace and prosperity to Kashmir, ensuring that the sacrifices made during those historic days are upheld and cherished.
