IMD Reports Cyclone Hamoon Weakening, Now a Depression South of Mizoram

Mizoram : On Wednesday, a senior scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar revealed that the severe cyclone ‘Hamoon’ had significantly weakened and was now classified as a depression located in the southern region of Mizoram. Initially, Cyclone Hamoon had unleashed powerful winds gusting between 130 and 145 kmph while still in the Bay of Bengal. However, by the time it made landfall, it had weakened into a cyclonic storm with wind speeds ranging from 75 kmph to 85 kmph, gusting up to 95 kmph.

According to the scientist, the eastern coast of India had not suffered significant damage. Some areas in Northeast India, particularly Tripura and Mizoram, were expected to experience rainfall due to the system. There was a depression situated over Mizoram, which was anticipated to further weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area.

In preparation for the cyclone, a “storm warning cage number 2” was set up at Pamban Port in Rameswaram on Tuesday to alert fishermen about Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Hamoon’ over the Bay of Bengal, as confirmed by port officials. On Monday, the state administration had placed all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) on alert in light of the formation of cyclonic storm ‘Hamoon’ in the Bay of Bengal.
