Bhaderwah : Empowers Inmates Through Innovative E-Learning Program at District Jail Bhaderwah
In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting education and rehabilitation among incarcerated individuals, the Department of Computer Science & IT, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, in collaboration with Prisons Department, J&K, at District jail Bhaderwah has successfully conducted an e-learning course within the premises of the district jail. The program, designed to impart knowledge and skills to inmates, marks a significant step toward the reformation and reintegration of offenders back into society.
The e-learning course, organized by the Department of Computer Science & IT, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, brought the power of education directly to the inmates, offering them a chance to pursue higher education and acquire valuable skills while serving their sentences. Through this innovative initiative, the university has demonstrated its commitment to creating opportunities for education, irrespective of an individual’s circumstances

Dr. Jatinder Manhas Head of Department of Computer Science & IT, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, expressed his enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “Education has the transformative power to change lives, and every individual, regardless of their past, deserves the opportunity to learn and grow. By extending our educational outreach to the incarcerated population, we aim to empower them with knowledge, skills, and a renewed sense of purpose.”
The e-learning program not only addresses the educational needs of the inmates but also contributes to their social and emotional development. Inmates who participate in educational programs while incarcerated are statistically proven to be less likely to reoffend, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in breaking the cycle of crime.
Ms Bablu Sharma, Programmer, Department of Computer Science & IT, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, emphasized the University’s dedication to creating a positive impact through education. The faculty members including Dr Abid Sarver, Dr Neeraj, Mr Abrar, Miss Upma Scholar Ms Priya and Mr parvesh Singh, Mr Yassir Ali and Mr Rahat Mughal activily and voluntarily took part for smooth conduct of the Course. Mr Arif Khateeb liasoned th course and created a good communication between both the organizations.Department of Computer Science & IT, Bhaderwah Campus, is proud to be a part of this initiative, aligning with our mission to foster a learning environment that transcends traditional boundaries. We believe that education has the power to transform lives, and by reaching out to incarcerated individuals, we are fostering a culture of rehabilitation, empathy, and hope.”
The success of this e-learning course at District jail Bhaderwah, the University of Jammu’s commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. By extending the reach of education to the incarcerated population, the university is paving the way for a brighter, more educated future for all.
The first three months course was run from 15th may to 15th august 2023. On 29th august exams were conducted and today on 13th October the successful inmates were awarded course completion certificates by Dr Jatinder Manhas Head of Department of Computer Science & IT, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, in presence of Superintendent jail Mushtaq Ahmed Malla, and Bablu Sharma Programmer, Department of Computer Science & IT, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu.
