Udhampur, July 14 : Farmers in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, are celebrating as tomato prices reach an all-time high of Rs 150 per kilogram, bringing them significant income and renewed hope for the future. This unexpected surge in prices has provided a much-needed boost to the local agricultural community, which has faced numerous challenges in recent years.

Mohammad Aslam Bhat, a hardworking farmer from Bain village in the Chenani block of Udhampur district, expressed his satisfaction with the exceptional profits this season. Despite some damage to his tomato fields due to unexpected rainfall, the remaining crop thrived, allowing him to earn substantial returns. After waiting for two decades, they finally earned Rs 3,000 per crate, a significant increase from the previous Rs 150-200 per crate.

The sudden surge in tomato prices can be attributed to a scarcity in the market. Previously, due to low prices, many farmers had stopped cultivating tomatoes. However, with reduced supply and consistent demand, prices skyrocketed, bringing newfound prosperity to farmers like Mohammad Aslam Bhat. They are now encouraging fellow farmers and young individuals to reconsider agriculture as a viable profession, highlighting the potential for substantial earnings in the current market.

The success story of tomato producers in Udhampur serves as an inspiration for other agricultural communities facing similar challenges. Farmers are optimistic that the recent success in the tomato sector will continue, providing long-term benefits to the farming community in the region. They are jubilant over their “red gold” and enjoying the fruits of their hard work and dedication finally paying off.

The future looks promising for Udhampur’s tomato growers, who are eager to seize this rare opportunity to secure a better future. With more than 500 farmers in Bain village engaged in tomato and vegetable farming for many years, the significant profits they have gained for the first time are a cause for celebration and renewed optimism.
