Jammu and Kashmir, June 30: In preparation for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, authorities have instructed all Amarnath Yatris to obtain Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) cards from designated locations in Jammu and Kashmir prior to embarking on the pilgrimage. Pilgrims have been strongly advised not to travel without these cards, as they are now mandatory for entry into the yatra area.
The RFID cards, issued by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB), utilize arbiter technology and are linked with the yatris’ Aadhaar cards. This enables each pilgrim to be traceable in case of getting lost during the trekking journey while also assisting in verifying their identity.
To ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage, the Jammu and Kashmir government has released comprehensive guidelines for Amarnath Yatris. These guidelines have been disseminated through prominent front-page advertisements in Friday newspapers under the headings “Do’s for the Yatris” and “Don’t’s for the Yatris,” as published by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
The annual 62-day-long Amarnath Yatra is set to commence on July 1, following twin routes of Pahalgam in South Kashmir and Baltal route in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal District. Adequate facilities and stringent security arrangements have been put in place to facilitate the pilgrimage.
The first batch of 3,488 pilgrims was flagged off by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha from the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas base camp in Jammu on Friday. Yatris have been advised to wear comfortable clothing, sturdy trekking shoes, and to acclimatize themselves to the high altitude atmosphere by walking slowly while ascending. It is also crucial for yatris to stay hydrated by consuming an adequate quantity of water.
In the event of any discomfort, such as shortness of breath, pilgrims are advised to seek medical assistance and, if necessary, descend to lower altitudes. Yatris are urged to avoid overexertion and to take regular breaks during the journey. Additionally, they are reminded to maintain cleanliness and refrain from littering along the trekking route and surrounding areas.
To ensure a smooth yatra experience, yatris are advised not to undertake the journey on an empty stomach and to avoid consuming alcohol, caffeinated beverages, and smoking. It is important to adhere to the designated routes and exercise caution while passing through “danger zone” signages.
With the exception of adverse weather conditions that resulted in unfortunate incidents last year, the Amarnath yatra was conducted peacefully. In 2022, despite flash floods triggered by a cloudburst on July 18, which claimed the lives of 15 pilgrims and caused injuries to many more, over 3.60 lakh pilgrims paid their respects at the holy cave shrine.
