Introduction:
As a fresh MBBS graduate, I vividly recall the pain I felt when a surgical resident was attacked in West Bengal. I was young and filled with outrage. Years later, on May 10, 2023, a young doctor named Dr. Vandana Das was tragically stabbed to death in Kerala while dutifully serving her patients. This incident evoked a sense of numbness, defeat, and cynicism within me. Despite numerous cases of violence against doctors, protests, and assurances, the status quo remains unchanged. This article delves into the disheartening reality of the dangers faced by doctors in India and the urgent need for society to value and protect their lives.
The Perils Doctors Face:
Society expects doctors to save lives, yet fails to acknowledge the constant danger they face from the very people they strive to help. The lack of security and the pervasive threat of violence hinder their ability to perform their duties effectively. How can doctors be expected to go to work every day, knowing it may be a death trap? The absence of sensibility, empathy, and a safe working environment is deeply troubling.
The Sacrifice of Doctors:
The medical profession demands immense sacrifice. Doctors invest their youth in mastering their skills and dedicate their lives to caring for others. Personal commitments, family time, and celebrations take a back seat to patient care. Yet, the profession remains undervalued, and doctors receive little in return for their selflessness. It is time for society to recognize the invaluable contributions and sacrifice of doctors and prioritize their well-being.
The Need for Enhanced Security:
The audacity of certain individuals, including Kerala’s Health Minister Smt. Veena George, who shamelessly belittled the deceased doctor by questioning her experience, further exemplifies the prevailing disregard for the medical community. Doctors deserve the same level of security afforded to those in airports, government buildings, and parliament. Taxpayer money should be allocated to protect those who save lives, rather than being squandered on corrupt politicians. Only when doctors feel safe can they effectively fulfill their duty of saving others’ lives.
Hope for Concrete Changes:
This tragic incident should not become just another statistic. It is my fervent hope that it serves as a catalyst for tangible changes on the ground. We must combat the system’s cynicism and rally together to demand a safer environment for doctors. It is high time society stands in solidarity with the medical community, supporting and protecting those who dedicate their lives to healing others.
Conclusion:
The brutal killing of Dr. Vandana Das highlights the urgent need to address the escalating violence against doctors in India. It is a stark reminder that doctors’ lives are at stake while they strive to save others. Society must value and prioritize the safety of these dedicated professionals who sacrifice so much. Let us not allow this incident to fade into oblivion; instead, let it galvanize us into action, ensuring concrete changes that protect and respect the lives of doctors.
