Under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), material vendors are appointed by Rural Development Department to provide necessary supplies to workers doing work under the scheme. However, our investigation has found that despite the appointment of these vendors, people are still purchasing material from local vendors who are not registered with the Department of Rural Development.
These appointed vendors only exist on paper and do not provide any material to the workers. Yet, when material payment is released by the department, it is transferred to these vendors who have no physical shop or premises for material storage. This begs the question: is there a nexus between the concerned department and these on-paper vendors?
At Himalayan Express, we will continue to investigate this issue and present our findings in a follow-up story. It is important to hold government schemes accountable and ensure that they are functioning in the best interest of the people they are intended to serve. We will not stop until we uncover the truth behind this potential misuse of taxpayer funds. Stay tuned for more updates.
