Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra declared on Wednesday that the Congress party will vigorously oppose the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists proposed by the Election Commission (EC) in Kerala. This announcement comes during her two-day visit to Wayanad, further intensifying the political discourse on electoral integrity in the state.
Speaking to journalists, Priyanka accused the EC of using the SIR process as a means to manipulate the electoral rolls. She stated, “The Election Commission plans to carry out the SIR of voter lists in many states, including Kerala, and we will strongly oppose it.” She emphasized how the party has already fought against similar measures in Parliament and continues to advocate for fair election practices.
Priyanka condemned the SIR exercise, labeling it as “the only way of committing fraud and cheating in the election,” and questioned the democratic validity of such a process. Her sharp criticism comes on the heels of events in Bihar, where she alleged that the implementation of SIR “undermines democracy.”
“We have witnessed the consequences of their actions in Bihar. If this pattern continues in every state, it poses a significant threat to democratic processes, and we must stand firm against it,” she asserted.
During her visit, Priyanka inaugurated the newly constructed Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Government Ayurveda Dispensary building in Ernad, Malappuram district, part of her constituency. This inauguration is part of her broader agenda to further development initiatives in Wayanad.
Priyanka arrived at Karipur Airport early in the morning and traveled by road to reach Wayanad. Party sources indicate she has planned to inaugurate various development projects aimed at improving healthcare and infrastructure in the region.
As the political landscape heats up in Kerala, Priyanka’s stance against the EC’s proposal marks a significant chapter in the ongoing debate about fair electoral practices in India. The Congress party’s leadership aims to rally support from citizens concerned about democratic integrity.
