Minister Satish Sharma addressing the Legislative Assembly

The Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, addressed the Legislative Assembly today, assuring that there is no shortage of food grains in the Keran and Jamgund areas of Kupwara district. This announcement comes in response to concerns raised by MLA Mir Saifullah regarding essential food supply in these remote regions.

During winters, these areas often become inaccessible for up to six months due to heavy snowfall, leading to alerts about the availability of essential commodities. Responding to the Calling Attention Motion moved by Mir Saifullah, Minister Sharma assured that the government actively manages the food supply to mitigate any potential shortages.

Mir Saifullah highlighted to the House the pressing issue faced by residents in Keran and Jamgund, who frequently experience disruptions in food supply due to harsh winter conditions.

In his detailed reply, Minister Sharma outlined the government’s proactive measures, stating that authorities ensure advance dumping and distribution of food grains under various schemes. This process begins well ahead of winter, covering an eight-month span from November to June each year, to ensure that these remote and border areas remain supplied during periods of heavy snowfall and road closure.

To further substantiate his claims, Sharma provided specific data regarding the distribution of food grains. For the Jamgund area, he reported that out of the required 536.14 quintals of food grains for the period from November 2025 to June 2026, 100% of the required quantity has already been successfully delivered.

In Keran, the situation is similarly promising. Though the area requires 2774.43 quintals of food grains, 800 quintals have already reached the location. Additionally, 346.80 quintals have been stored in advance at designated locations to ensure availability.

Minister Sharma reassured the Legislative Assembly members that the remaining quantity will be delivered and stocked by or before October 31, 2025. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring an uninterrupted supply of food grains to all remote and border regions across Jammu and Kashmir.
