In a remarkable recognition of courage, Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu has received the esteemed Vir Chakra for gallantry. This honour, awarded for his exceptional performance during Operation Sindoor in May, reflects his outstanding contribution during a critical military operation.
The Government Gazette, dated October 4, details the official citation that celebrates Group Captain Sidhu’s remarkable skills amidst challenging conditions. He “flew multiple deep-penetration strike missions to destroy designated targets with surgical precision” while navigating “complex threat scenarios and layered air defenses.”
During the intense four-day military confrontation between India and Pakistan, his squadron, equipped with advanced fighter aircraft, conducted successful missions in hostile airspace, accomplishing all assigned tasks effectively.
As the Commanding Officer, Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu showcased extraordinary acts of gallantry, decisive leadership, and steadfast commitment to duty in a high-stakes combat environment. The citation highlights his willingness to disregard personal safety in pursuit of mission success.
Leading operations from three different locations along the Western sector, Sidhu made “dynamic, real-time decisions” in response to evolving threats. His bold leadership and tactical brilliance not only ensured the successful completion of missions but also safeguarded the lives of his fellow airmen.
Under his command, the IAF established an “enhanced offensive posture,” which proved to be a decisive advantage during the operations. The Government Gazette confirms that the IAF achieved all designated objectives, thanks in part to Sidhu’s exceptional aerial strategy.
In a significant recognition of valor, a total of nine IAF pilots received the Vir Chakra for their roles in precision strikes targeting terrorist infrastructure and military installations within Pakistan-controlled areas during Operation Sindoor, which commenced following the Pahalgam terror attack.
Among the distinguished recipients are other exemplary pilots, including Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra. Group Captain Arora’s citation noted his “dynamic leadership and courage” during an unescorted strike mission. He skillfully traversed heavily defended airspace, executing low-level night manoeuvres that achieved pinpoint accuracy against formidable enemy radar and missile threats.
Also honoured, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik received recognition for his “resolute valour” and “audacious manoeuvring” that disrupted enemy formations, showcasing the high level of tactical acumen displayed by IAF personnel during these operations.
The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has sanctioned a total of 127 gallantry awards alongside 40 distinguished service awards on the eve of the nation’s 79th Independence Day. These recognitions honour the bravery and dedication of Indian Armed Forces personnel, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding national security.
