Farooq Abdullah Urges Government to Learn from Leh Violence

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) President Farooq Abdullah has called on the BJP-led Central government to heed lessons from the recent violence in Leh, Ladakh. The unrest erupted due to long-standing demands for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule, reflecting deep-seated local frustrations.

During a press conference held on Thursday, Abdullah attributed the violent protests to unfulfilled promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir over the years. He highlighted that these demands resonate with the citizens’ aspirations for greater autonomy and rights.

Abdullah emphasized that the unrest stems from local grievances rather than external influences. He noted the initiatives of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who organized peaceful protests, including a hunger strike and a barefoot march from Leh to Delhi, emphasizing non-violence as a way to voice local concerns.

The JKNC chief also issued a stark warning about the potential risks facing border areas like Ladakh, particularly in light of China’s destabilizing actions in the region. He urged the Central government to engage in earnest dialogue with the people of Ladakh, aiming to address their needs and aspirations effectively.

In the wake of the violence, four people lost their lives, and over 80 individuals sustained injuries, including police personnel. Protesters expressed their discontent by setting fire to the BJP office, police vehicles, and various buildings. In response, law enforcement deployed tear gas and opened fire to control the situation.

Abdullah’s remarks echo a growing concern that the region’s stability relies heavily on the government’s ability to respond to the legitimate demands of its citizens. He concluded that to maintain peace and prevent further escalation, the government must prioritize dialogue and address the core issues that lead to unrest.
