India has called on the global community to stop terror organizations like Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed from using Afghan territory for their activities. This statement was made by India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, during a recent UN Security Council meeting aimed at addressing the pressing challenges in Afghanistan.
Why India is Concerned About Terror Groups in Afghanistan
On Wednesday, Harish articulated India’s concerns, mentioning that the international community must coordinate efforts to ensure that UN-designated terror entities, including ISIL and Al Qaeda affiliates, do not exploit Afghanistan. The situation in Afghanistan is critical, and it is imperative that decisive actions are taken to prevent these organizations from instigating further violence.
The ambassador said, “We believe in the utmost importance of international and regional consensus and cooperation on key issues concerning Afghanistan.” This reinforces India’s commitment to maintaining peace in a country that shares a long-standing civilizational relationship with India.
Humanitarian Assistance and Development Support
In addition to combating terrorism, India is also focused on providing humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan who have been suffering due to prolonged instability. Following a devastating earthquake last month, India was one of the first nations to respond with aid.
“India delivered 1,000 family tents and 15 tonnes of food supplies to the affected provinces,” Harish noted. Furthermore, he mentioned that an additional 21 tonnes of relief materials, including essential medicines and hygiene kits, were dispatched swiftly to support the Afghan public.
Strategic Partnerships for a Stable Afghanistan
India’s approach to Afghanistan combines immediate humanitarian relief with long-term developmental strategies. According to Harish, India has supplied over 50,000 tonnes of wheat and significant medical assistance since the Taliban takeover in August 2021.
Moreover, India is collaborating with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to extend support through drug rehabilitation programs, particularly aimed at aiding women affected by addiction. “Our commitment to meeting the developmental needs of the Afghan people is non-negotiable,” Harish emphasized.
The Need for an Updated Approach
India also highlighted that focusing solely on punitive measures against terrorist groups is unlikely to yield the desired results. As the situation in Afghanistan continues to evolve, it’s clear that a new strategy is vital. Harish stated, “Afghanistan needs a fresh approach with unused policy instruments to support its people living in dire conditions.”
