Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Mohinder Bhagat secured a significant victory in the Jalandhar West bypoll in Punjab, defeating his nearest BJP rival, Sheetal Angural, by a margin of 37,325 votes. In Himachal Pradesh’s Dehra, Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, also won the seat.
The Jalandhar West bypoll was necessitated after Angural vacated the seat, having quit AAP and returned to BJP.
The INDIA bloc candidates made strong showings, leading in 11 of the 13 seats where bypolls were held on Wednesday. According to Election Commission of India trends, candidates from Congress, AAP, TMC, and DMK were ahead in 11 assembly seats.
In West Bengal, TMC candidates led in all four assembly seats where bypolls were held. Krishna Kalyani was ahead of his BJP rival Manas Kumar Ghosh in Raiganj, while Mukut Mani Adhikari led in Ranaghat Dakshin. Madhuparna Thakur and Supti Pandey were leading in Bagda and Maniktala, respectively, with BJP’s Binay Kumar Biswas and Kalyan Chaubey as their nearest competitors.
In Uttarakhand, Lakhpat Singh Butola and Qazi Mohammad Nizamuddin led in Badrinath and Manglaur constituencies, respectively. Hardeep Singh Bawa was ahead in Nalagarh. Congress candidates were also leading in Madhya Pradesh’s Amarwara.
These results indicate strong support for the INDIA bloc across multiple states in the recent bypolls.
