HATHRAS (UP), July 3: The death toll from the stampede at a religious congregation in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras has risen to 121, a senior official reported on Wednesday. According to the Office of the Relief Commissioner, 28 people were injured in the incident on Tuesday.
Of the deceased, 19 victims remain unidentified. The Uttar Pradesh Police have registered an FIR against the organizers of the religious event.
On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh had initially reported the death toll at 116. Most of the casualties were women, with only one man and seven children among the victims.
The tragic incident occurred as thousands gathered near Phulrai village in the Sikandrarau area for a ‘satsang’ led by religious preacher Bhole Baba. The stampede happened around 3:30 pm when Baba was departing from the venue.
