J&K’s Weather Authority Dismisses Significant Flood Risk

Srinagar, Kashmir, July 1: Amid concerns over potential heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir from July 5 to July 7, a respected weather expert has reassured the public that a major flood is unlikely to occur in the region.

Following the devastating flood of 2014 that particularly affected the Valley, locals have been apprehensive in light of media reports predicting heavy rainfall during the mentioned period. Speaking exclusively to IANS, Sonam Lotus, Director of the Meteorological (MeT) Department in Ladakh union territory, provided insights into the weather outlook.

Lotus clarified, “In the Valley, we expect light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers possible between July 5 and July 7. However, this is not anticipated to lead to widespread flooding. There may be instances of flash floods and cloudbursts in higher altitudes, contributing to increased water levels in rivers and streams.”

“During the monsoon season, particularly from July to mid-September, caution is always advised in the Valley. The monsoon is currently active over J&K and is expected to strengthen further. The forecast for July 5 to July 7 does not indicate prolonged heavy rainfall that would trigger a widespread flood event,” Lotus assured.

He further advised residents in higher regions of the Valley to remain vigilant without succumbing to alarmism about a generalized flood threat.

Regarding the Jammu division, Lotus noted, “Rainfall is likely to be more intense in the Jammu region, with heavy downpours in certain areas that could lead to flash floods, cloudbursts, and mudslides.”

“In light of these conditions, I urge caution while emphasizing that there is no imminent flood situation across J&K during this period,” he concluded.

Sonam Lotus, a veteran weather forecaster trusted for over a decade, has provided clarity amid concerns reminiscent of the 2014 floods. Additionally, his assessment comes as the annual Amarnath Yatra is underway, attracting thousands of pilgrims to Kashmir.
