T20 WC: Pressure Mounts on Top-Order and Dube as India Faces Bangladesh

North Sound (Antigua), Jun 21  – The enduring rivalry between India and Bangladesh promises an enthralling encounter as an undefeated Indian team faces a struggling Bangladesh side in the Super Eights clash of the T20 World Cup on Saturday. Both teams are under pressure to have their batting stars hit peak form.

India’s overall head-to-head record against Bangladesh is overwhelmingly favorable, yet Bangladesh has shown resilience in the past. The history between the two nations includes not only on-field battles but also off-field tensions, with Bangladesh often voicing concerns over India’s financial dominance in cricket.

In the ongoing World Cup, India is a formidable contender for the title, having displayed a professional performance against Afghanistan in their opening Super Eights match. With a tight schedule, India needs its underperforming players to step up, particularly the top-order pair of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Both players have shown glimpses of form but have yet to deliver a defining innings.

Left-hander Shivam Dube, selected for his ability to hit sixes in the middle and death overs, has struggled to replicate his IPL form. His performance against the USA in a group match was overshadowed by Suryakumar Yadav’s standout effort. Another failure might prompt the team to consider Sanju Samson in the middle order.

A positive sign for India was Hardik Pandya’s explosive cameo against Afghanistan, highlighting his renowned hitting ability. On the bowling front, India is likely to retain its combination, with left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav expected to keep his place after impressing in the Caribbean conditions. The spin-friendly wickets have prompted India to play three spinners, a strategy they are likely to continue.

Axar Patel, speaking after the Afghanistan game, emphasized the advantage of having three left-arm spinners, including two finger spinners and one wrist spinner. The communication among the spinners has been crucial to their success as a unit.

India’s primary goal in the Caribbean is to win the trophy, and a solid performance against Bangladesh will be another step towards that objective, with a challenging match against Australia looming on June 24.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, faces a must-win situation after their loss to Australia. Their batting has been inconsistent throughout the tournament, lacking the power-hitters needed for quick runs. The underperformance of openers Litton Das and Tanzid Khan has exacerbated their struggles.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Shanto acknowledged the need for the top-order to score runs, expressing hope that the bowlers would maintain their form. Shanto and Towhid Hridoy showed promise against Australia, but the rest of the lineup faltered. They will need to find a way to handle India’s Jasprit Bumrah, who has been exceptional with eight wickets and an economy rate of just 3.46 runs per over.

Bangladesh’s bowlers, led by Mustafizur Rahman, have performed decently, but leg-spinner Rishad Hossain requires more support from his spin counterparts.

Squads:

Bangladesh: Tanzid Hasan, Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto (captain), Shakib Al Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mustafizur Rahman, Jaker Ali, Tanvir Islam, Shoriful Islam, Soumya Sarkar.

The match begins at 8 PM IST.
