Air India Set to Introduce Premium Economy Class on Selected Domestic Routes Starting July

Mumbai, June 19: Air India announced on Wednesday its plans to introduce premium economy class on select domestic routes starting next month. Currently, Vistara is the only other Indian carrier offering this travel category on its domestic flights. The Tata Group-owned airline revealed that it has refitted two new A320neo aircraft into a three-class configuration. This setup includes eight seats in business class, 24 seats with extra legroom in premium economy, and 132 seats in the economy category, providing passengers with a broader range of travel choices.

This marks the first time Air India has introduced premium economy cabins on its narrow-body aircraft. Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director at Air India, emphasized that the introduction of a three-class cabin to the airline’s narrow-body fleet and the commencement of interior refits represent significant steps in enhancing the overall flying experience. He noted that this upgrade complements the enhanced experience already available on Air India’s A350 fleet, new B777s, and other wide-body planes, which will undergo refitting over the next two years.

Air India plans to extend the three-class configuration across its entire full-service narrow-body fleet within the next year. The airline is progressively refitting existing aircraft and will deliver new aircraft with the updated Air India experience.
