NEW DELHI, June 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon gram panchayat presidents to spearhead a people-led initiative promoting holistic health by raising awareness about yoga and millets, emphasizing their role in preserving soil health and combating climate change.
In a letter addressed to Gram Pradhans, PM Modi extended his best wishes to all residents of Gram Panchayats ahead of the 10th International Yoga Day.
“As custodians of grassroots democratic institutions, I urge you to foster a movement for holistic health by spreading awareness about yoga and millets,” PM Modi wrote in the letter dated June 13, 2024.
He highlighted the importance of organizing yoga-based programs in various community settings such as panchayat premises, schools, Anganwadis, and Community Health Centres to inspire people, especially the youth, to adopt a sustainable and stress-free lifestyle.
PM Modi underscored that the International Day of Yoga, celebrated globally on June 21, 2024, commemorates the profound impact of yoga on individuals and societies worldwide. This year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Self and Society,’ aims to strengthen efforts towards building a healthier nation, he noted.
“Yoga, an ancient cultural gift, promotes holistic health and wellness by enhancing physical and mental strength,” PM Modi emphasized. He highlighted the nutritional benefits of millets, or ‘Shree Anna,’ which contribute to good health, soil preservation, and climate resilience. The increasing demand for millets also boosts income opportunities for small farmers, he added.
Recognizing its universal significance, the United Nations designated June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 through Resolution 69/131, proposed by India and supported by a record 175 member states.
PM Modi originally introduced the proposal during the 69th session of the General Assembly, emphasizing yoga’s role in fostering unity of mind and body, and its holistic benefits for health and well-being.
In conclusion, PM Modi’s letter to Gram Pradhans underscores India’s commitment to promoting yoga and sustainable agriculture practices as integral to global health and environmental stewardship.
