Beijing, June 5 — China extended its congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the victory of the BJP-led NDA coalition in the general elections, expressing readiness to work with India to foster bilateral relations. The Election Commission of India declared the results for all Lok Sabha constituencies, with the BJP winning 240 out of 543 seats and the Congress securing 99.
Despite the BJP-led NDA comfortably surpassing the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the BJP itself fell short of the majority mark for the first time since 2014.
“We noted the results of India’s general election and extend congratulations on the victory of the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.
During a media briefing, Mao emphasized the importance of a stable India-China relationship for the interests of both countries, as well as for regional and global peace and development. She stated that China is prepared to work with India to advance bilateral ties, considering the fundamental interests of both nations and their peoples.
Relations between India and China have been strained, particularly since the eastern Ladakh border standoff began on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong Tso area. Despite the tension, trade between the two countries has continued. The two sides have conducted 21 rounds of Corps Commander-level talks to resolve the standoff.
