New Delhi : In a recent development, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take moral responsibility for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s performance in the Lok Sabha polls and step down from his position. Ramesh criticized the Prime Minister, stating that he used to portray himself as extraordinary, but the election results have proven otherwise. Ramesh urged Modi to resign, emphasizing that this is the message conveyed by the election outcome. Ramesh also referred to a statement made by the Prime Minister in 2016, where he had remarked that he was a fakir and would simply pick up his bag and leave if the opposition posed a threat. Ramesh reminded Modi of his own words, stating that the time has come for him to take his bag and head towards the Himalayas. Supporting Ramesh’s sentiment, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also suggested that Modi should withdraw his name from the candidacy for the post of Prime Minister. Gehlot criticized Modi for making the 2024 Lok Sabha elections all about himself, with phrases like “Modi’s guarantee” and “Modi government again” being prevalent, overshadowing the BJP itself. Gehlot accused the Prime Minister of disregarding critical issues such as inflation and unemployment during the campaign. Moreover, Gehlot highlighted Modi’s claim of securing 370 seats for BJP and 400 seats for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) under his leadership. However, the election results have made it evident that neither the BJP nor the NDA will achieve these numbers. Given the BJP’s failure to secure a clear majority in Modi’s name, Gehlot argued that it is now time for Modi to withdraw his candidature for the post of Prime Minister. The situation demands a reassessment of the party’s leadership and a reevaluation of their approach moving forward.
