Voting Underway for Six Legislative Council Seats in Karnataka

BENGALURU, June 1: Voting is underway for six seats in Karnataka’s Legislative Council, representing graduates and teachers constituencies. The polling began at 8 a.m. and will continue until 4 p.m. on Monday.

The election sees the Congress fielding candidates for all six seats, while the BJP is contesting four and the JD(S) two. The BJP and JD(S) have entered into an alliance for this election. A total of 78 candidates are in the fray across the six constituencies. The Congress aims to secure all six seats to gain a majority in the Legislative Council, also known as the Upper House in Karnataka.

Dr. Chandrashekar Patil is contesting from the Karnataka North-East Graduates seat for the Congress, while Amarnath Patil represents the BJP. In the Karnataka South West Graduates Constituency, senior leader Ayanur Manjunath, who recently joined the Congress, is up against Dr. Dhananjaya Sarji of the BJP.

For the Bengaluru Graduates Constituency, Ramojigowda is the Congress candidate, with A. Deve Gowda running for the BJP. In the South East Teachers’ Constituency, the BJP has fielded senior leader Y.A. Narayanaswamy, while D.T. Srinivas is the Congress contender.

The JD(S) candidate for the Karnataka South West Teachers’ Constituency is S.L. Bhoje Gowda, facing off against Congress’s K.K. Manjunath. In the Karnataka South Teachers’ Constituency, the Congress has put forward former JD(S) leader Maritibbegowda, with K. Vivekananda contesting for the JD(S).

The votes will be counted on June 6. These elections were necessitated by the retirement of six sitting members. The three graduates’ constituencies have a total of 3.63 lakh voters, while the three teachers’ constituencies have 70,260 voters. Polling is taking place in 461 stations for graduates’ constituencies and 170 stations for teachers’ constituencies.
