Tension Escalates: Army Personnel Allegedly Assault Four Policemen in Kupwara

SRINAGAR, May 29: Four policemen sustained injuries after allegedly being assaulted by army personnel in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials reported on Wednesday.

The injured individuals, including Special Police Officers Rayees Khan and Imtiyaz Malik, as well as Constables Saleem Mushtaq and Zahoor Ahmad, were admitted to SKIMS Hospital at Soura late Tuesday night. While their condition is stable, the incident has raised concerns over escalating tensions between the police and army forces in the region.

Reports suggest that the altercation ensued after a police party raided the residence of a local territorial army man in Batpora, Kupwara, as part of an ongoing investigation. This action allegedly provoked the local army unit, leading to their intrusion into the police station where the assault occurred.

Both police and army officials have refrained from commenting on the cause of the altercation, maintaining a silence on the matter. However, a Srinagar-based defence spokesman stated that he is not aware of the incident and would provide further details once available.

The incident underscores the delicate situation prevailing in the region and highlights the need for swift resolution and measures to prevent further escalation of tensions.
