BUDGAM, May 20: In a groundbreaking display of civic engagement, women emerged as a driving force in the Baramulla Parliamentary constituency elections, advocating for crucial infrastructural development, reduced household burdens, and enhanced employment prospects for the region’s educated youth.

Out of the 17.37 lakh eligible voters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency, approximately 8.62 lakh were females. Recognizing the significance of their participation, nearly 18 “Pink Polling Stations,” one in each Assembly segment, were established exclusively for women. This pioneering initiative, mirroring the success of similar stations in the Srinagar Parliamentary constituency, aimed to encourage greater female voter turnout.

Manned entirely by women, from poll workers to security personnel, these Pink Polling Stations received additional support from Asha and Anganwadi workers, providing invaluable assistance and guidance to female voters. Commending the initiative, an elderly voter in the Bemina area of Budgam praised the patience and supportiveness of the female helper, emphasizing the importance of feeling comfortable and informed throughout the voting process.

Voicing their electoral motivations, women highlighted pressing community issues, including the urgent need for improved infrastructure, healthcare facilities, and employment opportunities. From concerns over polluted water sources to the economic strain caused by rising household expenses, voters articulated their aspirations for a better quality of life for themselves and future generations.

For many, the establishment of women-only Polling Stations symbolized a significant step towards women’s empowerment and inclusivity. Emphasizing the safe and welcoming environment provided by these stations, voters expressed gratitude for the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights without apprehension or discomfort.

In addition to the Pink Polling Booths, specialized Polling Stations catered to diverse segments of the population, including youth, persons with disabilities, and environmentally conscious voters, ensuring a truly inclusive and accessible voting process for all.

As the election results loom on the horizon, the resounding participation of women in the electoral process stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to shaping the future of their communities and reaffirms the vital role they play in advancing democratic values and principles.
