Ahead of Elections, Army Thwarts Infiltration Attempt in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara

SRINAGAR, May 16 : Official sources reported that security forces successfully prevented an infiltration attempt in Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir.

The incident occurred in the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara late last night when the Army personnel stationed along the Line of Control (LOC) observed suspicious movement by potential infiltrators.

“Upon being challenged, the infiltrators opened fire, prompting a response from the security forces, leading to an encounter around 1 am,” sources revealed.

Following the exchange of fire, the area is now under intense search operations. As of now, no bodies have been discovered.

While there is yet to be an official statement from the Army or police regarding the operation, it is noteworthy that this infiltration attempt coincides with the ongoing election campaign for the Baramulla Lok Sabha seat. Kupwara district falls within the jurisdiction of the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency, slated for polling on Monday.

Meanwhile, in a separate joint operation conducted by the army and police in Amrohi, Tangdhar, two pistols and ammunition were recovered. The operation was launched based on specific intelligence input.

“During the search operation conducted on May 15, 2024, in the general area of Amrohi, Tangdhar, Kupwara, two pistols, ammunition, and other war-like stores were recovered,” stated a post by the Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar Corps on social media platform X.
