New Delhi, May 14: Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Tuesday that the decision to abrogate Article 370 by the Narendra Modi government is yielding positive outcomes in Jammu and Kashmir, as evidenced by the increased voter turnout in recent elections. This observation follows the recording of about 38 per cent polling in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency during the fourth phase of general elections.

Comparing the recent polling figures with previous years, Shah highlighted a significant increase in voter participation. In 2019, Srinagar recorded 14.43 per cent polling, while the figures stood at 25.86 per cent in 2014, 25.55 per cent in 2009, and 18.57 per cent in 2004.

In a statement on ‘X’, Shah noted that the abrogation of Article 370 has not only deepened democracy’s roots in Jammu and Kashmir but has also bolstered people’s trust in the democratic process. He emphasized that the rise in the poll percentage reflects the resolute response of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to those opposing the decision to revoke Article 370 and advocating for its restoration.

The Modi government’s decision to repeal Article 370, granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was executed in 2019, leading to the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
