The death toll from devastating storms in south Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state has tragically risen to 116, as reported by the Civil Defense agency.
Additionally, there are 143 people reported missing, while 756 individuals have sustained injuries. The latest update from the agency, cited by Xinhua news agency, also indicates that around 400,000 people have been evacuated due to the severe weather conditions.
A staggering 1,947,372 individuals have been affected by the storms, with security forces and rescuers carrying out the rescue of 70,863 individuals.
The situation has been exacerbated by the flooding of the Guaiba River in Porto Alegre, the state capital, leading to the closure of the Salgado Filho International Airport.
The calamitous events, which began on April 29, have caused widespread devastation, marking the worst climate tragedy in the history of Rio Grande do Sul. More than 437 municipalities have been severely impacted by the storms in this key agricultural and livestock-producing region, which shares borders with Argentina and Uruguay.
