Sam Pitroda Sparks Controversy: Remarks on Eastern and Southern Indians likened to Chinese and Africans

Indian Overseas Congress chairman Sam Pitroda sparked controversy with his recent statement, suggesting that “people in the east look like Chinese while those in the south look like Africans.” Pitroda, known for his recent remarks on inheritance tax that stirred debate within the Congress, was discussing India’s diversity when he made this comment.

Describing India as a beacon of democracy globally, Pitroda highlighted the nation’s ability to thrive for 75 years in a harmonious environment. He emphasized the coexistence of diverse populations across India, where individuals from various regions exhibit different physical appearances and cultural backgrounds.

However, Pitroda’s remarks drew criticism, particularly from the BJP, which labeled them as “racist.” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla condemned Pitroda’s comments, asserting that such divisive statements undermine India’s unity.

Responding to the controversy, Congress expressed disapproval of Pitroda’s remarks, describing them as “unfortunate and unacceptable.” Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh distanced the party from Pitroda’s analogies, emphasizing the importance of promoting unity and inclusivity in India.

Pitroda’s statement has reignited debates about identity, diversity, and unity in the Indian political landscape, reflecting the ongoing tensions surrounding sensitive issues of race and ethnicity.
