Priyanka Gandhi: India Under PM Modi’s Rule Resembles “British Raj-like Conditions”

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the Central government, likening the prevailing conditions in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership to those reminiscent of the “British Raj.” Addressing Congress workers in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli constituency, where her brother Rahul Gandhi is contesting, Priyanka Gandhi criticized the government’s policies for primarily benefiting billionaires.

She highlighted concerns over inequality, stating that international reports indicate a worsening condition compared to the British rule era. Priyanka Gandhi expressed dismay over the weakening of democratic institutions such as the media and Parliament, which were originally strengthened by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru to safeguard people’s rights.

Priyanka Gandhi also voiced apprehensions about attempts to alter the Constitution, particularly provisions like reservation that have significantly impacted millions of lives. She criticized the Prime Minister’s conduct, citing it as unbecoming of the leadership position.

Reflecting on the development initiatives in Rae Bareli, Priyanka Gandhi accused the Modi government of hindering projects initiated during their tenure and attributing them to its own achievements.

The Rae Bareli constituency is scheduled for polls on May 20. In the previous Lok Sabha Elections in 2019, Sonia Gandhi secured victory in the constituency. Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, who previously represented the neighboring Amethi constituency, faced defeat in the 2019 elections against BJP’s Smriti Irani.
