Gurmitkal (Karnataka), April 29: Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of Congress, asserted on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi resorts to targeting the Gandhi family because he lacks substantial achievements of his own.
Speaking at a public gathering in Gurmitkal, Yadgir district, Kharge highlighted Congress’s lead in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, a development he suggested has perturbed Modi. He mentioned that his son-in-law, Radhakrishna Doddamani, is contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Kalaburagi, which includes Gurmitkal.
Kharge criticized Modi for repeatedly targeting prominent figures like Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Rajiv Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and himself, suggesting that Modi resorts to such tactics due to his own lack of accomplishments.
Dismissing Modi’s claims about Congress favoring specific religious communities, Kharge emphasized that Congress’s focus has always been on equitable distribution of resources, particularly to benefit the poor.
He highlighted Congress’s historical efforts under leaders like Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, including land reforms, nationalization of banks, and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), aimed at empowering the marginalized sections of society.
Kharge also pointed out Congress’s initiatives such as the Food Security Act, which provides essential food grains to millions of impoverished citizens every month. He contrasted this with Modi’s efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting that Modi’s actions were only made possible by Congress’s prior legislation.
Questioning Modi’s claims of strengthening the nation, Kharge challenged him to provide tangible evidence of his achievements, particularly in addressing issues like poverty and inflation. He emphasized that while Modi may boast about his chest size, what truly matters is his government’s effectiveness in addressing the basic needs of the people.
