A delegation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has filed a complaint with the Election Commission, accusing the Congress party of disseminating malicious, false, unverified, and defamatory advertisements in prominent newspapers.
In their letter to the ECI, the BJP stated, “Today, on April 24, just two days before the polls, the Congress party published totally false, malicious, and defamatory news advertisements on the front page of almost all notable newspapers.”
The BJP specifically pointed out an advertisement by the Congress with the heading ‘Chambu’, alleging that it portrays the Central Government as having cheated the state of Karnataka. The term ‘Chambu’ is a slang term used to imply ‘being cheated or empty promise’.
The BJP shared examples of these advertisements published in prominent newspapers and accused the Congress of knowingly disseminating false information to influence voters’ perceptions and affect the election outcome.
The party emphasized that such advertisements violate the Model Code of Conduct and the Representative of the People Act. They highlighted the seriousness of the issue and its potential impact on the election outcome.
Karnataka is set to go to the polls in two phases—on April 26 and May 7, with the counting scheduled for June 4. The BJP has historically performed well in the state, winning 25 out of 28 seats in the 2019 general elections.
