New Delhi, Apr 23: Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly rebuked Congress leader P Chidambaram for his remarks regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), asserting that the Congress should abandon its long-standing policy of appeasement politics and focus on developmental agendas.

In an interview with ANI, Shah accused the Congress of resorting to appeasement politics since the 1960s to secure electoral victories. He emphasized that the BJP, under PM Modi’s leadership, has prioritized development-centric governance since 2014, leading to electoral success based on this agenda. Shah criticized Chidambaram’s call to revoke the CAA, alleging that it was aimed at consolidating the Congress’ minority vote bank rather than addressing any genuine shortcomings of the law.

Shah reiterated BJP’s commitment to principles of justice and fairness, rejecting any appeasement tactics. He affirmed that the CAA will remain in force and the three criminal laws will be implemented as planned. Shah dismissed Chidambaram’s objections, asserting that the BJP is dedicated to ensuring justice for all citizens within a reasonable timeframe.

Responding to Chidambaram’s involvement in the committee discussions regarding the three criminal laws, Shah noted that the Congress leader had previously offered positive suggestions and appreciation for the proposed legislation. He emphasized the transformative potential of these laws in modernizing India’s criminal justice system and accused the Congress of obstructing progress in corruption cases.

Chidambaram had recently announced that if the INDIA bloc assumes power at the Centre, it will repeal the CAA and the three criminal laws introduced by the BJP government, sparking sharp criticism from Shah and highlighting the ongoing ideological divide between the two parties.
