On Thursday, National Conference leader Mian Altaf Ahmad submitted his nomination papers for the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat, representing the opposition INDIA bloc. Accompanied by NC vice president Omar Abdullah and Congress General Secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Ahmad filed the papers before Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, Syed Fakhruddin, who serves as the returning officer. Speaking to reporters afterward, Abdullah expressed optimism about Ahmad’s victory, highlighting his influential role as a Gujjar leader from Kangan in central Kashmir. He thanked Mir for his support, emphasizing the INDIA bloc’s confidence in Ahmad’s candidacy.
Responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on the impact of gun culture in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah stressed that the National Conference has been a major victim of violence in the region. He noted the party’s significant losses due to this violence, including the deaths of over 4,000 senior workers, party office bearers, and former legislators.
Regarding Ghulam Nabi Azad’s withdrawal from the contest in the Anantnag Lok Sabha seat, Abdullah stated that they were aware of his decision beforehand. He also commented on the BJP’s absence from the electoral race in the valley, hinting at the possibility of last-minute changes.
Congress leader Mir expressed confidence in the INDIA bloc’s prospects in Jammu and Kashmir, predicting a sweep for their candidates. He highlighted the anger among the people of Jammu toward the BJP and expressed assurance of Congress victories in both Lok Sabha seats in the region. Mir dismissed Mehbooba Mufti’s participation as not being a setback for the INDIA bloc, emphasizing the alliance’s determination to contest effectively against the BJP. He criticized the BJP’s diversionary tactics and expressed optimism about the INDIA bloc’s success in the upcoming elections.
