New Delhi, Mar 28: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed openness to potential changes in the Agniveer recruitment scheme during a discussion at the Times Now Summit on Thursday. He assured that the government has prioritized the security of Agniveers’ future.
Highlighting the importance of youthful energy in the armed forces, Singh defended the scheme, emphasizing the enthusiasm and technological adeptness of the youth. He stated, “Youthfulness is essential in the military. Young individuals are more enthusiastic and tech-savvy. We have taken measures to ensure their future security. If necessary, we will make adjustments.”
Under the Agniveer scheme, recruits serve for four years, including six months of training and 3.5 years of deployment. Upon retirement, they have the option to apply for continued service in the armed forces.
Additionally, Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ by aiming to transform India into an exporter of engines. He emphasized the need to explore opportunities for indigenous engine production and technology transfer to achieve this goal.
Responding to opposition claims regarding border tensions with China, Singh assured the public of the safety of India’s borders, urging trust in the capabilities of the Indian armed forces. He emphasized, “We must have full faith in our military. I want to reassure the nation that our borders are completely secure.”
