Srinagar, Mar 20: Recent disclosures from the Traffic Police Department have brought to light the staggering extent of traffic violations in Jammu and Kashmir, revealing that a whopping Rs 11,76,13,125 in fines has been collected from errant motorists and pedestrians over the past five years, spanning from 2019 to 2023.
These revelations, prompted by an RTI query filed by MM Shuja, shed light on the alarming frequency of traffic offenses within the Union Territory. The breakdown of fines collected on a yearly basis illustrates the persistent disregard for traffic regulations among a significant portion of the populace.
In 2023 alone, the Traffic Police accumulated a significant Rs 2.14 crore in fines from violators, indicating a concerning trend. The preceding year, 2022, witnessed an even higher amount of Rs 3.4 crore collected, underscoring intensified efforts by authorities to curb violations and enhance road safety.
This pattern continues in previous years, with Rs 2.5 crore collected in 2021, Rs 1.9 crore in 2020, and Rs 1.74 crore in 2019, emphasizing a consistent prevalence of traffic infractions across the Union Territory.
These substantial figures not only highlight the severity of the issue but also underscore the potential risks to public safety posed by reckless behavior on the roads. Common violations contributing to the hefty fines include speeding, reckless driving, disregarding traffic signals, unauthorized parking, and other infractions that disrupt traffic flow and endanger lives.
In response, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police have escalated efforts to promote road safety and instill a sense of responsibility among road users. Through stringent enforcement measures, awareness campaigns, and the imposition of substantial fines, authorities aim to deter violators and promote compliance with traffic regulations.
However, the consistent collection of significant fines over the past five years suggests that more comprehensive strategies are needed to address the root causes of traffic violations and foster a culture of responsible driving and pedestrian conduct.
