New Delhi, Feb 8: According to the health ministry, India has recorded 211 new cases of Covid, with the number of active cases decreasing to 1,478 from 1,496 as reported on Thursday. The ministry’s data, updated at 8 am, also indicates one new death within the past 24 hours.
The daily cases had dropped to double digits until December 5, 2023, but began to rise again due to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions. Since then, the highest number of new cases reported was 841 on December 31, 2023, representing 0.2 percent of the peak cases reported in May 2021, according to official sources.
India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the Delta wave in April-June 2021 recording the highest incidence of daily new cases and deaths. At its peak on May 7, 2021, 414,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths were reported.
Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, the country has witnessed over 4.5 crore infections and more than 5.3 lakh deaths over the span of about four years. The number of people who have recovered from the disease stands at over 4.4 crore, as per the ministry’s website.
