New Delhi, January 29 : India witnessed a daily surge of 112 new cases of COVID-19, as reported by the health ministry on Monday. The total number of active cases stood at 1,460, with no new deaths recorded within the past 24 hours, according to the ministry’s 8 am update.
The decline in daily cases had persisted until December 5, but a subsequent increase was observed following the emergence of a new variant and the onset of cold weather conditions. Notably, the highest single-day rise of 841 cases occurred on December 31, constituting 0.2% of the peak cases reported in May 2021.
Among the active cases, approximately 92% are currently undergoing recovery under home isolation. Notably, the available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases or a surge in hospitalization and mortality, according to official sources.
India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the delta wave peaking during April-June 2021. On May 7, 2021, at its zenith, the country reported 414,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths. Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, India has seen over 4.5 crore infections and more than 5.3 lakh deaths in about four years.
The recovery count stands at over 4.4 crore, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as per the ministry’s website. The country has administered a total of 220.67 crore doses of COVID vaccines, contributing to the ongoing efforts to manage and mitigate the impact of the pandemic.
