Srinagar, January 17: While Jammu experienced a notable improvement in night temperatures, bone-chilling cold persisted in Kashmir on Wednesday. According to the Meteorological (MeT) Department, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.4, Gulmarg at minus 3.2, and Pahalgam at minus 3.9. In Ladakh, Leh reported a minimum of minus 9, Kargil minus 7.3, and Drass minus 10.9. Jammu city registered 6.1, Katra 7.2, Batote 3, Bhaderwah 1, and Banihal at minus 0.4 as the lowest temperatures of the night.

The ongoing 40-day period of severe winter, known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ began on December 21 and is set to conclude on January 30. In an unprecedented turn of events, Chillai Kalan this winter has witnessed no snowfall. The absence of snowfall raises concerns for the upcoming summer, as it may result in water scarcity due to the crucial role snow plays in maintaining water reserves.
