NEW DELHI, Jan 11: On Thursday, India reported 514 fresh COVID-19 cases, with the current active cases dropping to 3,422, according to the health ministry. Over the last 24 hours, three fatalities were recorded, two in Maharashtra and one in Karnataka, as per the 8 am update from the ministry.
The surge in daily cases, which had reduced to double digits until December 5, 2023, saw an uptick following the emergence of a new sub-variant, JN.1, and the onset of cold weather conditions. After December 5, the maximum single-day rise was 841 new cases on December 31, 2023, constituting 0.2% of the peak cases reported in May 2021.
Approximately 92% of the total active cases are recuperating under home isolation. The official sources indicate that the JN.1 sub-variant does not appear to be causing an exponential increase in new cases, hospitalizations, or mortality.
India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the delta wave peaking in April-June 2021, reporting 414,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths on May 7, 2021. The total recoveries in the country exceed 4.4 crore, resulting in a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as per the ministry’s website.
The COVID-19 vaccination campaign has seen the administration of 220.67 crore doses in India, according to the ministry’s records.
