New Delhi, Jan 4: The health ministry reported a single-day increase of 760 new cases of COVID-19, along with two additional fatalities on Thursday. The current number of active cases stands at 4,423.
The latest deaths, one each from Kerala and Karnataka, were recorded within a 24-hour period, as per the ministry’s data updated at 8 am. The daily case numbers had reduced to double digits until December 5, but a surge has been observed again, attributed to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.
During the peak of the pandemic, which began in early 2020, daily cases reached into the lakhs. Over the past four years, more than 4.5 crore people have been infected, resulting in over 5.3 lakh deaths across the country.
The number of individuals who have recovered from the disease has surpassed 4.4 crore, with a national recovery rate of 98.81%, according to the ministry’s website. As per the website, a total of 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country.
