New Delhi, Dec 4: Early trends in the Mizoram Assembly election on Monday indicate the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) making significant strides toward victory. The Election Commission of India reported that the ZPM is leading in 22 assembly constituencies, while the Mizo National Front (MNF) holds a lead in 10 seats as of 9:52 am.
According to the latest data from the Election Commission of India, ZPM’s chief ministerial candidate, Lalduhoma, is leading in the Serchhip constituency with 1390 votes.
The counting of votes for the 40-member Mizoram assembly commenced at 8 a.m., with the process taking place in 13 centers across the state in 40 counting halls. There are 399 EVM tables and 56 postal ballot tables in use.
The Election Commission deferred the counting to Monday, respecting the significance of Sunday in the Christian-majority state, following representations citing an important day in the religious calendar. Almost 4000 personnel are involved in the counting process, according to the state election commission.
Four major contenders are vying for victory in the northeastern state – the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Congress, and the BJP. The political landscape in Mizoram has been predominantly occupied by the Congress and the MNF since it attained full statehood in 1987.
Mizoram went to the polls on November 7, and the elections witnessed a robust challenge from the ZPM, Congress, and the BJP against the ruling MNF. The state has been governed by the MNF, led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, with the party’s dominance intermittently interrupted by Congress victories in 2008 and 2013.
The deployment of Central Armed Police Forces in the innermost cordon and state police in the outer cordon ensured security during the electoral process. The Deputy Commissioner, Nazuk Kumar, assured that the counting process is peaceful and that preparations are in place for any victory processions or celebrations that may occur.
